This is my free interpretation of Julius Caesar's Commentaries on his wars in Gaul, published by him in March 51 BC at what he considered to be the end of the war, when he had defeated the Gallic hero, Vercingetorix. Since that time Caesar's books have been copied over and over again in monasteries throughout Europe down to the coming of printing. As a result it has become standard reading for all Latin teaching worldwide. Translation is one thing; interpretation is another. We oldies would have had our knuckles rapped if we had deviated from word-for-word tranlation. However, a good interpreter will render the meaning of text or speech in the idiomatic language of the time.
That is what I've tried to do and will no doubt continue to do.

I downloaded this to my Kindle to use as a class read-aloud. We're translating portions from Caesar's De Bello Gallico, but since we can't translate much in class, we read aloud from the answer key to keep up with the Romans' adventures in Gaul. The Henle answer key is pretty wooden and boring, though, and this translation was a delightful change. My students enjoyed hearing words like "siesta" and "hullaballoo" pop up in a translation. One asked if this was the Message Bible version of De Bello Gallico. I thought, no--probably more like the NIV's dynamic equivalent! Anyway, thanks for a fun translation!

Well translated as far as I can tell. A classic of course. If you are interested in the history of the Roman empire, then this is a must read.
